A Few Good Blogs

Posted August 8th, 2006 | View Comments

I was going to have at the usual go-look-something-up in Metrolist and put it in Excel, then turn that into an article, when I suddenly became embarrassed.

There are so many excellent blogs out there, and often in comparison my little Metrolist to Excel to English formula makes me feel like just a hack among Hemingways. Just clicking on a couple of the folks linking to me was enough to begin the “You’re OK I’m Not” wheels turning.

Sacramento Landing, for example, has all kinds of different market statistics and analyses going, info on what builders are doing, etc. Really good stuff. And Kris Berg over at San Diego Home Blog has a really interesting article about how we as professionals are supposed to get along with a wide range of people. Well of course, “duh”, etc., but it’s surprising how often I hear agents talking about wanting to pick their clients. And I suppose in an industry where one can easily burn one’s gas and one’s Saturday on someone who turns out to be just looking, there’s no big surprise there.

Anyway, my hat’s off to those intrepid bloggers who manage to not just look up their blog in their local MLS every day. And with that, let me get ready for tomorrow’s post. Sorry, gotta go open MLS…

Don’t sell yourself short, John. Your stats have inspired me on many occassions, and my “best” thoughts are inspired (read: stolen) from other Bloggers. Regarding the particular post you reference, I am rethinking my “greater good” position after spending my approximate sixth weekend with clients who have no idea what they want to buy! Thirty-plus homes and counting… They are looking forward to starting a family, and I am looking forward to attending the graduations of their children-to-be-named-later in 19 or so years, presumably after another day of house-hunting. :(

Well, thanks for the kind words. There’s nothing quite so satisfying as fishing for a compliment and landing one. :)

Most of my clients lately have averaged about three weekends apiece. Yes, six could be a bit old. Hang in there. I’m sure you’ll find them something before the apocalypse.

    Cheers,

    John

Robert, lighten up. It was a joke about the Biblical end of the world, not a comment on the market. Sheesh.

Yes, yes, we’re all so overpaid for what we do.

Try it some time, then let me know.

Just a post or two more, man. We almost have it licked…

  • http://www.SanDiegoHomeBlog.com Kris Berg

Not one to be easily offended, I am coming close. This is NOT an easy business, I do NOT spend most of my day driving back and forth to the bank to deposit my big, overly generous paychecks, and a successful transaction does NOT involve just a dozen hours of paperwork and a few weekends of my time. I think I feel a new post coming on…

Welcome to my world. For some mysterious reason that I can only attribute to some unpaid karmic debt, I have attracted a small yet nevertheless not elite band of readers whose mission, as near as I can tell, is to agent bash on the theory that the down market will thereby lend them the appearance of being de rigeur.

I think I’m a regular expression or two away from a technical solution, but I haven’t proved it yet.

Meantime, don’t let my bugaboos bother you — if they smell your fear they’ll end up on your web site!

    John,

I have always found you to be an excellent blogger… a trailblazer in the Sacramento area if you will. I have been considering contacting you on many an occasion, but my respect for your time has kept me at bay. But now a burning debate has my desire to contact you hell bent on breaking tempered silence.

It hasn’t gone unnoticed that you have occupied pole position for various common real estate search results in the Greater Sac area. Bravo – you are the envy of thousands. But I’d like to ask you about the Long Tail results you are experiencing.
I already know the answer to the question I want to ask you, I just don’t know what the examples to support it are.
How has the effort of blogging about residential real estate in greater Sac affected your ability to broaden your reach in the search engines?
I wrote an article on the answer to this question (http://realestatetomato.typepad.com/the_real_estate_tomato/2006/07/riding_the_long.html) and would love to hear just how long the tail has grown for you in the years you have been blogging.

The reason I chose to ask you is complicated… but basically I feel you and your blogging efforts best represent the example I am looking for to defend the claims I made in the article. The claims came under some scrutiny (http://realestatetomato.typepad.com/the_real_estate_tomato/2006/08/catch_a_tiger_b.html) by a reader of mine, and I, not being a residential realtor can’t defend my claims with personal blogging success (apples and oranges).

I do respect your time, and if I have over-stepped my invitation to comment with a deep question, I apologize and will have you get back to business. But if you would like to examine the phenomenon more closely, I’d love to hear from you.

    Thanks for your time.
