Sacramento County Schools

Sacramento County Schools cover the entire range of the spectrum. As a major metropolitan area, some of the inner city schools suffer from some of the same resource problems as other older, inner city communities throughout the country. And, as elsewhere in the country, these schools suffer considerably on comparisons of standardized tests. On the other end of the spectrum, schools in a number of districts in Sacramento County compete favorably and even surpass many top rated schools in El Dorado County and Placer County. To see how the different schools stack up (at least on paper), here are the 2004 Sacramento County API Scores.

Further information about schools throughout Sacramento County can be found at the GreatSchools.Net Sacramento County Schools page. Another good resource of course is the site of the Sacramento County Office of Education.

I thought it was interesting in light of my own experience moving here to view these results. When my family moved here in 1996, El Dorado Schools had a clear edge in quality. Today -- no doubt due to a rapidly growing tax base fueled by lots of new home sales -- Folsom, Elk Grove, and other parts of Sacramento County have developed first rate school systems of their own, but it appears to some extent that the prices haven't caught up with that phenomenon.
