Sacramento Gold Rush Days

How old is old?  Well in Sacramento, old is anything over 150 years.  Back East we got all excited in the seventies by things that were over two hundred years old  (like our country).  Oh yeah, let’s celebrate the bicentennial!  Some towns even celebrated their tri-centennials.  Well out here the landmark event was the Gold Rush.   Hence we have a place called Old Sacramento, where you can see what Sacramento looked like back in the good ol’ days, circa 1849. It’s a fun place to visit anytime but if you want to see it at its best then check it out on Labor Day Weekend when they will be celebrating Gold Rush Days.

Mention the word fair and what comes to your mind?  "A fair for all and no fair to anyone" is a line that just won’t go away for me. People, dear friends and loved ones even, look at me and shake their heads as my voice wanders off muttering "I think we’re all bozos on this bus."  Who among us remembers Firesign theatre anymore?  There are times when I still get the urge to say "Let’s stand him on his head. Awww, he’s no fun he fell right over." Again with the strange looks and the glavin.

But what I really wanted to talk about today was the California State Fair.  It’s coming soon and it’s going to be great fun.  Did you know that if you park over at Arden Fair Mall, you can take a bus over to the fairgrounds and skip paying to park?  It doesn’t take much longer to get in than parking at the official parking lot does either.

My favorite attraction is the baby animal tent.  With a little luck, you can watch a live birth.  Last year I saw a baby calf come into the world.  Truly amazing.

If animals aren’t your thing, there’s plenty of other excitement.  There’s rides and races and music and food and exhibits and it really is a Fair for all.
